Askew to Run for Senate Seat

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Former Gov. Reubin O. Askew said today that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat of Lawton Chiles, who is retiring next year.
Askew released a brief statement and promised to make an announcement very soon. He served as governor until 1979, then made a failed bid for President in 1984. The only announced Republican candidate for Chiles’ seat is Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.).
