Malaysia Frees 8 Held in Major Crackdown

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Malaysian government has eleased a leading critic of the government and seven others arrested under a law allowing detention without trial in a massive crackdown police say was aimed at reducing racial tension. The weekend releases brought the total number freed since November to 52.
Police arrested more than 100 people, including government and leading opposition members, when they launched the biggest crackdown in over a decade in late October.
