A 17-year-old Romanian tennis champion, upset after being denied a chance to play in a international tennis tournament because of a bureaucratic error in her country, asked for and was granted U.S. asylum in Miami.
“I am delighted to be in the United States, and I hope for nothing but the best from this country,” said Magdelina Voinea-Rou, one of Romania’s top women tennis players.
Voinea-Rou said her father and two sisters in Romania do not know that she is not returning home.
Voinea-Rou was one of two Romanian teen-agers who arrived in Miami Beach for the 41st Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships only to find that the Romanian Tennis Federation had failed to file their applications on time.
