State Fines Hospital After Kidnap-Slaying

MERCED, Calif. — State officials have fined a Merced convalescent hospital $10,000 for poor security that officials believe led to the kidnap and slaying of a 92-year-old woman in November.
The California Health Department licensing division in Fresno fined Hy-Lond Convalescent Hospital the highest amount possible for the type of offense.
The citation stems from the killing of Cecile Oliver, who was dragged from her convalescent room in a bloody struggle in late November. A paroled sex offender is being held in connection with her death, according to Merced Police officials.
Officials from Beverly Enterprises, which runs Hy-Lond, could not be reached for comment.
