Top-seeded Pam Shriver defeated Wiltrud Prost of West Germany, 6-1, 6-2, in the third round of the $323,400 New South Wales Open tennis tournament Thursday at Sydney, Australia.
In men’s play, top-seeded Christo Van Rensburg of South Africa defeated Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals.
At Auckland, New Zealand, top-seeded Peter Lundgren of Sweden outlasted qualifier Todd Witsken, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in the second round of the $93,400 Benson and Hedges Open.
Lundgren will face India’s Ramesh Krishnan in today’s quarterfinals. Krishnan beat Michiel Shapers of the Netherlands, 7-5, 6-3.
Second-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel beat unseeded Briton Jeremy Bates, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, and Dan Goldie defeated Marty Davis, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
In an exhibition tournament at Adelaide, Australia, Sweden’s Mats Wilander defeated Johan Kriek, 6-3, 7-6. In an upset, Australian Mark Woodforde defeated Sweden’s Anders Jarryd, 6-3, 6-4.
