Thousands of Nicaraguans marched in downtown Managua to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Pedro Joaquin Chamorro, the outspoken editor and publisher of La Prensa whose assassination helped spark the 1979 Sandinista revolution. Chamorro was gunned down in Managua at the height of a campaign he was leading to oust dictator Anastasio Somoza. Notably, the largest group of marchers was made up of about 10,000 anti-Sandinista activists who have seized upon Chamorro’s reputation as a defender of civil liberties. Earlier, a group of pro-government marchers went to the spot where Chamorro was killed and left a wreath.
