JALALABAD, Afghanistan — A bomb exploded in a bus during the funeral for independence leader Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan today and killed at least 17 people, many of them mourners from Pakistan, witnesses said.
About 25 people were injured when the bomb exploded on a bus parked about three miles from the garden of the 98-year-old pacifist’s home, where he was buried to a 21-gun salute, witnesses said. Afghan leader Najibullah was among those in the garden for the funeral.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Gaffar Khan, who helped lead the Indian subcontinent to independence from Britain 40 years ago, died in Peshawar, Pakistan, Wednesday after suffering from a lung infection and strokes.
