CANBERRA, Australia — Australia could soon resume aid and diplomatic links with Fiji, Foreign Minister Bill Hayden said Friday.
Australia severed its links with the South Pacific state after two coups there last year.
Hayden told reporters that a team of Australian officials would be in Fiji this weekend for talks on resuming the $14.2 million in aid allocated for Fiji in 1987-88.
Hayden said the talks would determine when and at what level the aid could be resumed but said it would be aimed “largely at the needy.”
