Broadcaster, Coalition Come to Terms in S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO — Broadcaster Jim Gabbert, trying to salvage his $11 million purchase of KHIT-FM, has come to terms with a coalition of former KKCY-FM listeners who successfully blocked federal approval of the sale.
The Coalition to Save “The City,” formed by fans of KKCY-FM, the former call letters of KHIT-FM, and Gabbert Thursday announced a compromise which should enable Gabbert to buy the station and give the coalition partial programming control.
The unusual deal calls for the restoration of KKCY’s free-form musical format the 5,000-member coalition sought to preserve, and for the formation of an “advisory” panel to advise veteran Bay Area program director Thom O’Hair.
Coalition members said O’Hair’s hiring was pivotal in enabling the compromise.
