Local News in Brief : Higher Trash Rates Approved
- Share via
Torrance has agreed to rate increases of as much as 17% to empty its garbage trucks at Western Waste Industries trash transfer station in Carson.
The City Council unanimously agreed this week to raise the payment from $17 to $18 per ton, retroactive to Jan. 1. Under the agreement, the rate could rise to as much as $20 per ton by the middle of next year.
Each dollar-per-ton increase costs Torrance about $54,000 a year, but the city’s 29,000 residential customers will continue to pay $9.25 per month for trash pickup at least through July.
Western Waste requested higher rates because Los Angeles County increase fees to dump the garbage at a landfill in Puente Hills.
