United Brands Co.’s profit grew 10% to $59.4 million for 1987. Sales totaled $3.3 billion, down 1% from the previous year. The New York food company said the results reflect a 14% gain in earnings from the Chiquita Brands unit due to increased volume and higher average worldwide selling prices as measured in dollars, and a decline in earnings at John Morrell because of strikes at two of its largest meat plants.
