MESA, Ariz. — Gene Mauch abruptly quit today as manager of the California Angels “for health reasons of an unspecified nature” and scout Cookie Rojas assumed the job on an interim basis, the team announced.
A news release advised that “Mauch (is) leaving the club temporarily,” and said the veteran skipper will return immediately to his home in Palm Springs for further diagnosis. Speaking briefly to reporters at the Angels’ spring training complex in Mesa, Mauch said he will “undergo immediate testing” but did not indicate whether he plans to enter a hospital. “I’m going to find out if this is how you’re suppose to feel when you’re 62,” said Mauch, who has managed in the majors for 26 years. General Manager Mike Port said the Angels will withhold additional details until later.
