Local News in Brief : Club Will Admit Women

Regular members of the California Club voted 728 to 297 not to continue to bar women from membership, according to a statement of the downtown club’s board of directors.
Among a separate category of non-resident members, the vote against barring women was 149 to 38.
About 80% of the downtown Los Angeles club’s regular membership of 1,275 and 65% of the 285 non-resident members participated in the poll, the second in nine months on the women’s issue.
The directors--who had unanimously supported the position taken by the majority to accept women--said in a written statement: “The issues involved have now been carefully considered over a long period of time . . . so the club can now move on to other important matters. . . . Now, above all, let us pull together as a united membership, respecting each other’s viewpoints.”
Two women, E. Cameron Cooper, a senior vice president of Atlantic Richfield, and Linda Hartwick, a senior associate of the executive search firm of Korn-Ferry International, have been approved for club membership and are on a waiting list for vacancies to occur.
