Saugus 5, Palmdale 1--Junior right-hander Roger Salkeld recorded a school-record 17 strikeouts and pitched a one-hitter as the visiting Centurions rolled to their fifth consecutive win in a Golden League opener.
Salkeld, who has 35 strikeouts in 20 innings, walked five and surrendered a double that resulted in an unearned run in the fifth inning.
“He was overpowering and he had an excellent curve today,” Saugus Coach Doug Worley said.
The Centurions (5-2) banged out 11 hits, including two each by Darrell Davis, Tom Dodson, Jared Snyder and George Lopata. Salkeld (2-1) also was 2 for 4 and scored a run.
Saugus opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Davis singled, stole two bases and scored on an error and Snyder later singled to score Dodson.
Salkeld singled in the second and scored on a double by Davis. Palmdale is 4-3 overall.
St. Genevieve 10, Harvard 1--Roland De La Maza had 12 strikeouts and pitched a three-hitter to open Santa Fe League play at St. Genevieve. De La Maza (3-0), who has 48 strikeouts in 24 innings, scattered three singles and walked two. He also had a triple and a sacrifice fly to drive in two runs.
Senior Joe Chaparro was 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs for St. Genevieve (7-1). Chaparro drove in two runs with a single to highlight a four-run fourth inning. Chaparro doubled to score another run in the fifth.
Harvard scored an unearned run in the seventh on a single by Buck Robinson.
Bell-Jeff 8, Pater Noster 2--Junior Tony Armendariz hit a two-run home run in the sixth for visiting Bell-Jeff in a Santa Fe League opener.
Teammate Mike Thomson was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and Alex Vucurevic was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Rod Arancibia pitched five innings to pick up the win. Bell-Jeff, which had nine hits and committed three errors, improved to 2-4-1. Pater Noster is 3-4.
Channel Islands 6, Camarillo 2--Andy Betowski pitched a two-hitter in a Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands. Gil Valencia hit a solo home run and Nate Avery singled for the only hits for Camarillo (3-3).
Chaminade 19, La Salle 7--Greg Baumgartner highlighted an eight-run second inning with a two-run home run as Chaminade (5-3 overall) rolled in a Santa Fe League opener at La Salle.
Baumgartner, who was 2 for 3 with three runs batted in, also pitched four innings and recorded five strikeouts to improve his record to 2-0.
Tony Collatos, who doubled and hit a home run, was 3 for 3 with four RBIs. Ken Meyer was 2 for 3 with one RBI and Tim Lavin was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Catcher Mike LeCocq drove in four runs with a two-run single, a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
Rio Mesa 3, Dos Pueblos 0--Robert Ayala (3-0) struck out nine and pitched a four-hitter in a Channel League opener. Allan Moreno was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Rio Mesa (4-2 overall). Teammate Steve Soliz was 2 for 2 with one RBI.
Schurr 9, Burroughs 5--Pitchers Brian Forth and Chris Westbury walked 13 batters and gave up five hits, and Burroughs’ defense made four errors that led to seven unearned runs in a Foothill League opener at Burroughs.
John Butler led off the third inning with a home run, his second, to give Burroughs (2-3) a 5-2 lead. Schurr rallied for a run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Calabasas 9, Nordhoff 4--The Coyotes opened the game with three consecutive doubles and benefited from two errors and two walks in the second inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.
Chris Inglehart and David Kalman each had two hits for Calabasas (3-3-1, 1-0-1). Kalman also had two RBIs.
Senior right-hander Duane Dennis pitched the first complete game of his career.
