Prep Softball : Both Pitchers Have No-Hitters, but Kennedy Loses to Gahr

Cheryl Longeway, a freshman at Kennedy High School, and Gahr’s De De Weiman both pitched no-hitters and both had 10 strikeouts, but Gahr gained a 1-0 victory in the championship game of the Cypress Invitational Saturday at Oak Knoll Park in Cypress.

Gina Di Corpo of Gahr (9-2) reached first base on an error to lead off the fourth inning. She advanced to second on a passed ball, was sacrificed to third and scored on Chandra Tune’s groundout to second.

Weiman (7-1) was named the most valuable player of the tournament by the coaches, who selected Longeway (5-2) as the tournament’s best pitcher.

Kennedy fell to 9-4.

In other Cypress Invitational games:

St. Joseph 4, Loara 2--St. Joseph (6-1) scored four times in the first inning, aided by Pam Jones’ two-out two-run triple, and hung on to win the third-place game. Dunya Bleasdale tripled and drove in both runs for Loara (4-5) in the sixth inning. Beverly Stiglbaur (2-1) struck out seven for a complete-game victory.

Woodbridge 1, Los Alamitos 0--Tiffany Boyd (4-2) struck out 17 and allowed only three hits as the Warriors (5-3) won the fifth-place game.

La Mirada 4, Millikan 0--Dena Mullins of La Mirada struck out seven in four innings in the consolation game. Christy Roode picked up the save for La Mirada.
