KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Fourth-seeded Hana Mandlikova was upset Saturday at the Lipton International Players Championships by Sabine Auer, ranked No. 289, in a match that ended with Mandlikova angrily hitting a ball at a lineswoman.
Auer, a 21-year-old West German, survived five match points in the second set to advance to the fourth round, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
With the score 5-5 in the third set, Mandlikova became incensed when lineswoman Dessie Samuels ruled that an Auer shot had caught the baseline.
After Mandlikova lost the game, she threw her racket and was assessed a penalty point to start the next game. When she netted a shot to lose that game and the match, she picked up the ball and hit a shot cross-court that barely missed the lineswoman.
In men’s play, second-seeded Jimmy Connors won 12 of the first 14 points on his way to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Javier Sanchez of Spain, and seventh-seeded Anders Jarryd eliminated John Frawley of Australia, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
