Roy Tarpley set a club record with 24 rebounds and scored a career-high 29 points Tuesday night, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 124-105 National Basketball Assn. victory over the New York Knicks.
Four Mavericks scored 20 or more points. Rolando Blackman had 26, Sam Perkins 24 and Derek Harper 23. Perkins left the game with 9:23 to play with what was diagnosed as a bruised left knee.
Johnny Newman led the Knicks with a career-high 28 points.
The Knicks made a fourth-quarter run, cutting what had been a 23-point third-quarter deficit to 101-91 with 4:09 to play in Dallas.
But Tarpley’s three-point play with 3:45 left pushed Dallas’ lead to 104-91, and New York was never able to draw closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Tarpley set the previous club rebounding record of 23 earlier this season.
Tarpley started in place of the injured Mark Aguirre for the third straight game.
The Knicks, who won at San Antonio Monday night, saw their road record fall to 4-28. New York is 25-9 at home.
Denver 136, San Antonio 109--Blair Rasmussen scored 28 points to lead the Nuggets to the win at home.
Jay Vincent came off the bench to score 20 points for the Nuggets. Alex English and Mike Evans scored 18 apiece as the Nuggets improved their record to 40-26.
Jon Sundvold led the Spurs with 24 points, followed by Johnny Dawkins with 16 and Mike Mitchell with 14. The Spurs fell to 24-41.
Michael Adams wasted little time in extending his NBA record for consecutive games with a three-point shot to 27. He gave Denver a 3-0 lead 47 seconds into in the game.
Detroit 123, Indiana 104--Isiah Thomas scored 9 of his 25 points during a 14-0 third-quarter run that carried the Pistons to their 18th consecutive home victory.
Adrian Dantley came off the bench to score 26 points for Detroit, which trailed, 80-77, with 2:41 to play in the third quarter. But Thomas scored 9 consecutive points during the 14-0 run that gave Detroit a 91-80 lead with five seconds left in the period.
Although a three-point basket by Scott Skiles at the end of the third quarter brought the Pacers within 8, Detroit pulled away early in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 21 points.
Wayman Tisdale led the Pacers with 27 points.
New Jersey 102, Philadelphia 90--Roy Hinson hit all 13 of his shots from the field and scored 27 points as the Nets beat the 76ers at East Rutherford, N.J.
Hinson and center Tim McCormick, who added 22 points, were acquired from the 76ers in January in a trade for Mike Gminski and Ben Coleman. Gminski led the 76ers with 22 points.
Hinson and McCormick had a total of 17 points in the third quarter as New Jersey outscored Philadelphia, 33-18, to take an 85-68 lead into the fourth quarter.
The 76ers, whose three-game winning streak was snapped, played the entire second half without star forward Charles Barkley, who had only two points in 18 minutes because of a sore left ankle.
Milwaukee 111, Atlanta 98--Randy Breuer scored 27 points and matched his season high of 17 rebounds, lifting the Bucks to the win at Milwaukee.
The Bucks held a 76-70 lead before Jack Sikma made three free throws to start a 10-2 Milwaukee run that made it 86-72 with 1:11 left in the third quarter.
The Hawks, behind the shooting of Dominique Wilkins and Glenn Rivers, closed the gap to 99-94 with 5:44 left. But a basket by the Bucks’ Ricky Pierce, who scored 11 of his 17 points in the final quarter, made it 101-94 with 4:33 left, and Atlanta never got within 6 again.
Utah 103, Phoenix 96--Karl Malone scored 28 points and pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds, and Bobby Hansen stole an inbounds pass and scored with 8 seconds left to give the Jazz the win at Salt Lake City.
The victory enabled the Jazz to clinch a playoff spot and end the Suns’ season-high four-game winning streak.
Hansen finished with 22 points, Thurl Bailey had 19 and John Stockton 16 points and 21 assists. Mark Eaton contributed just 3 points but blocked 7 shots and grabbed 16 rebounds.
The Suns’ Eddie Johnson scored 27 points, including the 10,000th point of his career.
