Fire Hits U.S. Building in India

NEW DELHI — Sparks from workmen’s torches started a fire at the American cultural center today, damaging the building but causing no injuries, U.S. and fire officials said. About 150 firefighters battled the blaze for an hour at the American Center, which houses U.S. Information Service offices, a library, theater, meeting rooms and a media center.
The fire was an accident that had “absolutely no connection” with the visit of Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, said Douglas Rose, deputy director of the USIS in New Delhi. Carlucci arrived in New Delhi today and held two rounds of talks with Indian officials on defense cooperation and the peace process in Afghanistan.
