Alaska Airlines has tentatively scheduled a May 31 flight between Nome, Alaska, and the Siberian city of Provideniya. Soviet officials have yet to approve the flight, but unofficially they appear to favor the idea, according to an Alaska Chamber of Commerce official helping to organize the flight. Commercial flights between the United States and the Soviet Union were banned following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, but the prohibition was lifted about two years ago.
