Bo Schembechler, Michigan’s football coach, was named athletic director at the university. Schembechler, 59, will replace Don Canham, who is retiring July 1.
Schembechler was the board of regents’ first choice but rejected the offer in February after learning that he would have to resign as football coach after next fall. The regents then offered him a compromise, and Schembechler agreed to do double duty.
To help him, the university named Jack Weidenbach, director of business operations, as associate athletic director in charge of day-to-day operations.
