Casino at Alcatraz Doesn’t Make Ballot

SAN FRANCISCO — A proposal aimed at putting a gambling casino on Alcatraz Island failed to qualify for the June city ballot.

Supporters of Proposition N were unable to find a fourth member of the Board of Supervisors to sign the measure before Wednesday’s 5 p.m. deadline.

Only three supervisors backed the advisory measure calling on City Hall officials to explore the idea of converting the former federal prison site in San Francisco Bay to a gambling casino. Money raised from the casino would have helped correct the city’s budget deficit.
