‘Sodom und Gomorrah’
Austria, 1922, 85 minutes , 2:45 p.m . An epic saga of man’s noblest virtues overcoming the wages of sin. Echoing the style of Griffith and DeMille, director Michael Curtiz weaves a modern story with a parallel biblical tale in this Austrian silent. A painstaking reconstruction representing about 75% of the original material that retains the spectacle but employs some clunky, overwrought devices to bridge narrative gaps. Nonetheless, it’s more than just a historic curiosity.
