Southern Pacific Transportation Co.’s profit rose 79% for the first quarter to $17.7 million, compared to $9.9 million during the year-ago period. The San Francisco-based rail transportation company reported operating income of $20.8 million, up 174% from $7.6 million in 1987. Operating revenue for the first three months was $603.4 million, compared to $582.6 million last year.
