Three years ago, Tulane University suspended its basketball program for four years before the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. had a chance to investigate possible rules violations and a point-shaving scandal.
Wednesday the New Orleans school gave itself a year off for good behavior. Chet Gladchuk, the new athletic director, said that the Green Wave will field a team for the 1989-90 season, a year earlier than expected.
“We’re going to get it done,” Gladchuk said. “The NCAA’s committee on infractions has given us their blessing.”
The unofficial search for a coach started some time ago, Gladchuk said, and about 50 applications have been received.
