Two Los Angeles County physicians are among 40 new members elected to the Institute of Medicine, an organization chartered by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, institute officials said Monday.
Honored were Delbert A. Fisher of Torrance, professor of pediatrics and medicine and director of a research center at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and Kenneth I. Shine of Los Angeles, dean of the UCLA School of Medicine’s Center for the Health Sciences.
New members are elected by current active members for contributions to health and medicine or to related fields such as social and behavioral sciences, law, administration and economics, an institute spokesman said.
Election carries with it an obligation to devote “significant” time to committees studying “a broad range of health policy issues,” the spokesman said. Current institute projects include an investigation of the quality of medical care under Medicare and an examination of ways to prevent fraud in medical research.
