Two Navy airmen, one of them from San Diego, were killed while operating off the aircraft carrier Enterprise in the Far East, the Navy announced Monday. A second San Diego man was missing and presumed drowned.
Cmdr. Robert A. Anderson, 39, of Cardiff and Petty Officer 2nd Class David E. Stenstrom, 22, of Rochester, Minn., were killed when their plane crashed into the South China Sea Sunday afternoon, said Ken Mitchell, a spokesman for North Island Naval Air Station.
Two additional crewmen were aboard the S-3 Viking that went down 200 miles southeast of Hong Kong, Mitchell said. A search failed to locate Lt. Charles H. Roy, 31, of San Diego. Roy is presumed lost at sea. The lone survivor, Lt. William Kelly Henderson, age and hometown unknown, was treated for leg and back injuries.
