The state Senate on Monday approved a $300,000 study of a proposed commuter train route from Oxnard to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.
The bill, approved 30 to 0, was sponsored by state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia) and calls for local agencies to have until Aug. 15 to complete the study and negotiate a plan for service with the Southern Pacific railroad. The bill now goes to the Assembly.
Planners with the Southern California Assn. of Governments would conduct the study, which also includes analyzing possible commuter rail service in a corridor extending from Los Angeles to Lompoc, including Santa Barbara County, a Davis spokesman said.
A committee of transportation and railroad officials would oversee the study. Issues that need to be resolved for the San Fernando Valley line include the cost of upgrading tracks and signals and the cost of operations, officials said.
State Sen. Alan Robins (D-Van Nuys) has been the lead promoter of the rail line, which would stop at Glendale, Burbank Airport, Van Nuys, Chatsworth and Simi Valley.
