Board Asks Panel to Probe Jail Beatings

By a unanimous vote, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors formally requested Tuesday that the new grand jury, scheduled to take office July 1, investigate allegations that sheriff’s deputies have used excessive force against inmates.
The board’s vote comes one day after a judge ruled out extending the yearlong terms of outgoing county grand jurors so they could have more time to investigate the charges.
More than 60 men and women have alleged in recent weeks that they were beaten, chained or held naked in cells by deputies at county jails.
Sheriff John Duffy, who oversees staffing and management of the six county jails, has denied the charges.
