U.S. surgeons removed a cancerous tumor from the stomach of Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte, 62, but could not operate on his diseased liver. Dr. Benjamin Interiano, his personal doctor, said Duarte could die from the liver tumor in a few months. It “will keep growing and that will be the cause of his death. . . . It is impossible to predict how long, but I would put it at a matter of months,” Interiano said. Doctors at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington removed all of the tumor from Duarte’s stomach, which should make him more comfortable by relieving pain and lessening the danger of stomach bleeding.
