Gunman Kills Sheriff’s Deputy, Frees Jail Inmates

OAK GROVE, La. — A man armed with a shotgun walked into a sheriff’s office Sunday and killed a radio dispatcher, then freed two prisoners in the lockup, authorities said.
Authorities mounted a massive search for an ex-convict they allege was responsible for killing Deputy Jeff Gathings, 23. The suspect, 19-year-old Frank Bancroft, had been released from jail Tuesday after serving a sentence for theft, police said.
