The Detroit Pistons were the toast of the city Thursday at a noon rally and parade featuring the team that captured the hearts of Motown.

About 40,000 people turned out to cheer the team, which arrived in town Wednesday after losing the NBA championship Tuesday to the Lakers in seven games.

Mayor Coleman Young presented team captain Isiah Thomas and Coach Chuck Daly with a key to the city and said the team epitomized Detroit.

“The Pistons represent all the best qualities of this city,” Young said at the rally. “They are fighters. They are tough. They never quit.”

Having earned a spot among the NBA elite, most of the Piston players said they are already dreaming of bigger things next year. But Thomas said, “We came real close to getting to the promised land but we are not there yet. We got a chance to see it.”
