What a terrible, shortsighted tragedy that the apparent intransigence of UCLA officials should result in the withdrawal of Norton Simon’s magnificent collection (Part I, June 15).

I am sure that Simon is a “tough negotiator” but when one is giving a gift of almost a billion dollars, one should be permitted a few innings of hardball.

I can only hope that UCLA will find a way to resolve the outstanding issues separating it and Simon. It would be a very great disservice to the people of Los Angeles to let that collection go to another city because of petty differences.
