FROM OUR TABLOID TICKER: Forget about Bruce and Julianne. The romance that’s been making front page news in the British papers is the split-up between chart-topping pop tart George Michael and (gasp) Brooke Shields--who can now say she’s dated two No. 1 guys, George and Michael Jackson. Shields told Fleet Streeters that she was “wildly in love” with George (whom we’ll now mercifully refer to as GM ), whom she met when both were staying at the same hotel in (check one) Chicago, Los Angeles or New Jersey. “I had a terrible crush on him,” Shields told the London Sun. “But after a weeklong affair he said he had to go. I think he was frightened because of his career.” As is their custom, the London reporters were most curious about rumors that GM was gay. “I know he’s not,” she said. “You get a feeling about a man--and I can definitely tell you, he’s all man.” Shields said she has tried contacting GM recently, but “he seems to have changed his number.” However, one source close to the GM camp confided to Pop Eye that all is not lost--the twosome were spotted having dinner at a posh London restaurant just last weekend. Shields has been in England filming a TV miniseries. . . . And pop star Eddie Grant also made the London ‘loids, getting a front-page spanking in the Voice (Britain’s leading black newspaper) for hypocritically attacking apartheid while allegedly profiting from record sales in South Africa.
