Club-wielding police brutally dispersed thousands of Crimean Tatars who had gathered in Tashkent, the capital of the Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, to protest the Kremlin’s recent refusal to give them back their ancestral homeland on the Black Sea, one of the demonstrators said. Server Tuvarchy said he was among about 5,000 Tatars who took part in the protest before police moved in. At least two people were arrested while as many as 300 were detained at the railway station to prevent them from taking part, he said.
