Kookaburra III held on to win the fleet racing portion of the World 12-Meter Championships but had to skip the final race at Lulea, Sweden, because of a badly damaged keel.
The Australian boat, which beat Bengal III of Japan by 1 minute 29 seconds in the first of two races, was knocked out of action when it hit an unidentified obstruction.
Nordstjernan, with American Dennis Conner as skipper, finished third in the race and fourth overall.
