Local News in Brief : Trash Recycling Study

Mayor Tom Bradley announced Monday the start of a $1.1-million study of what is needed to begin citywide recycling of trash in Los Angeles next year.
The study will be conducted by consultants retained by the city. The chief consultant firm is CH2M Hill, which already advises the city on trash collection and sewer services.
Bradley said recycling of glass, newspapers and aluminum cans will reduce the amount of refuse taken to landfills by city-operated trucks. City officials have urged that the recycling program be mandatory, but that will be decided after the study is completed.
Bradley also announced the creation of a city hot line to receive ideas on recycling from residents: 800-833-8848.
