Union Pacific Railroad will close its repair shops in Omaha and move its operations to newer shops in North Little Rock, Ark. Railroad officials told the 770 workers at the Omaha locomotive and car shops that most of their jobs will be transferred to Arkansas or elsewhere beginning in 90 days. Jerry Davis, executive vice president for operations, said most workers will be offered transfers to North Little Rock or to somewhere else in the railroad system, which spans the western United States. The railroad is a subsidiary of New York-based Union Pacific Corp. Closing the Omaha shops will bring a $7 million one-time savings and will save $2 million a year thereafter, the railroad said.
