* 1/2 “Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night.”
New World. $79.95. 1987. G.
In this muddled cartoon feature, Pinocchio must recover a valuable music box and free Gepetto and the puppet/girl he has fallen in love with from the clutches of the evil Emperor of the Night. The story is uninteresting, despite vocal performances by Rickie Lee Jones, Ed Asner and James Earl Jones, and the animation uninspired. Comparisons to the 1940 Disney classic are inevitable and inevitably unflattering.
