Eight motion pictures from the Soviet Union, including several that have been banned there, will be spotlighted at the 12th Montreal World Film Festival, Aug. 24-Sept. 4.
The selection will include “The Commissar,” which was hailed by critics as a masterpiece but was shelved in the Soviet Union, and “Little Vera,” which will premiere at the Montreal festival and is billed as the first Soviet film to explore all facets of sensual love.
In addition, the festival will pay tribute to director Andrei Smirnov, three of whose films will be shown in the West for the first time. Smirnov will attend the festival.
