By a proclamation of the City Council, Irvine has become the first U.S. city to adopt the Healthy Cities project to promote a healthier community.
The Healthy Cities project is a program of the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization that urges municipalities to consider the health implications of their actions, according to a spokesman for the nonprofit People for Irvine Community Health, a grass-roots group that worked on behalf of establishing Irvine Community Hospital.
The City Council’s proclamation states that UC Irvine and the People for Irvine Community Health will work together to plan, implement and evaluate community health-promotion projects. The project will identify activities that promote a healthier community and assist other community groups to increase health promotion activities.
