Categorizing GOP and Democrats

With respect to taxation, Raymond Price (Op-Ed Page, July 3) imprudently categorizes Democrats as stupid and punitive while applauding Republicans as intelligent and just. To those of us who, as circumstances change, swing from one side to the other, such a premise insults our intelligence.

It is to be expected and tolerated that the disadvantaged poor gather into one party and the advantaged rich gather into the other to occupy the extreme left and right wings in a struggle for their own interests. If either viewpoint were to totally prevail, we would suffer either a communist state or a peasant/elitist one.

Taxation is one important tool with which we prevent such extremism and can hardly be classified in itself as good or bad. Economic theory and experimentation have yet to find the exact design and level of taxation that works best for our country.

Hence, we elect Democrats when we sense too much swing to the right and vice versa, and that check and balance has worked well.
