Local News in Brief : Parents of Man Killed in Sunland File Suit

The parents of a Los Angeles man who was shot and killed at a Sunland auto shop in February filed a wrongful-death lawsuit Wednesday against a man who investigators determined had acted in self-defense.

The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court’s Burbank branch by George and Ann Cowley. They allege that their son, Gregory Cowley, 23, was “wantonly and maliciously” killed by David Maurice Craig, 40, during an argument at Craig’s shop, Porsche Sports, on Feb. 26.

Detective Art Castro of the Los Angeles Police Department, who investigated the incident, said Craig was questioned after the shooting and was released. Castro said Los Angeles County district attorney’s investigators ruled that the shooting was in self-defense and was a justifiable homicide.

Lee Zorne, attorney for the parents, said Cowley was an arranger with a rock group when he was killed.

The lawsuit seeks $5 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
