2 Gang Youths Sentenced to Life

RENO — Two members of a Los Angeles-based youth gang each were sentenced today to two life sentences plus 26 years in prison for kidnaping and raping a 13-year-old and then stealing her lone dollar.
“This is a crime, I think everyone would agree, that shocked our community,” Washoe District Judge William Forman said in handing down the sentences. But he said he considered the 18- and 19-year-old defendants’ youth, relatively clean records and their guilty pleas in deciding against the maximum sentences of three life terms plus 36-45 years. The sentences will keep William Wright and Mark Banks behind bars for a minimum of nearly 20 years.
