Union Carbide’s profit soared 171% to $187 million in the second quarter. Danbury, Conn.-based Carbide, like other chemical companies, has seen its profit jump this year because of hefty price increases for commodity chemicals like ethylene, which are sold to other companies to make a variety of industrial products. Revenue rose 28% to $2.13 billion.
