RUEDESHEIM, West Germany — An unexploded bomb dropped by a U.S. warplane during World War II was discovered in the Rhine River west of Frankfurt on Monday, police said.
The 550-pound bomb was found near this tourist town, about 80 miles west of Frankfurt, by a team of divers during a routine check of buoy anchors on the riverbed.
Demolition experts were called in to defuse the bomb, and shipping on the river was halted for about 15 minutes, police said.
