ATLANTA — Michael S. Dukakis visited the grave of Martin Luther King Jr. today and praised the slain civil rights leader as “a man of action, a man of inspiration.”
Standing on a stage with King’s widow and with chosen running mate Lloyd Bentsen, Dukakis cited his own background as the son of Greek immigrants and quoted the words of King: “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.”
“Martin Luther King was a man of action, a man of inspiration,” Dukakis said. “He cared very deeply about some basic human values.”
Coretta Scott King told Dukakis: “We wish you well in this effort because we are counting on you to set things right again.”
