Monterey Park : City Manager Is Selected

The city manager of South San Francisco has been selected by the City Council as Monterey Park’s new city manager.
Mark Lewis, 37, will assume his Monterey Park post Aug. 22. He replaces David P. Bentz, the city’s former director of management services who has served temporarily in the position since the resignation of Lloyd de Llamas last October.
In announcing the choice, Mayor Christopher F. Houseman emphasized that one of Lewis’ strengths has been his ability to manage culturally diverse South San Francisco. The community has 52,000 residents, including large groups whose backgrounds are Asian, Latino or Italian.
Lewis, a native of Boston, attended Washington State University. After college, he worked in Alaska, first as an assistant to the city manager in Juneau, then as city manager of Valdez, which earned an “All-American” city award during his tenure, and finally as commissioner of the state Department of Community and Regional Affairs. In 1984, he came to South San Francisco as deputy city manager and last year became city manager.
