Vietnam Asks U.S. to Pay for Sea Rescue

BANGKOK, Thailand — Vietnam has asked the United States to pay all expenses involved in its rescue of three U.S. Navy aviators whose plane made an emergency landing in the South China Sea, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said today.
“Vietnamese authorities have asked the U.S. government to pay all expenses involved in the rescue, transportation and accommodations of the crew members. This request is under review,” said spokesman Bill Schauer.
He said the request was made while arrangements were being made for the return of the aviators.
Vietnam’s Communist government previously has demanded large sums for the return of Americans and other foreigners picked up in its territorial waters.
