California Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp, in a report to the Legislature, praised the state’s computerized fingerprint identification system, known as Cal-ID, saying that with it, “murderers, robbers, rapists, burglars and other criminals are now commonly identified for crimes that otherwise would go unsolved.” Before Cal-ID was begun nearly three years ago, he said, law enforcement agencies were usually unable to match a person to a latent print without a list of suspects.
