The Depression

Joseph Bell reminds us to care for others in a touching and honest column on the Depression (July 21). As a school counselor, I see many students consumed by greed and callous about those in financial difficulty.
John F. Kennedy was indeed the last President who inspired people to care, to help the luckless and to choose careers where one could act on personal belief, rather than make lots of money.
The students I counsel today laugh at the idea of teaching, for example. Why help children when one can become a business tycoon?
